As the first issue of The Sidekick is just days away from coming off the presses, the staff is ecstatic for Coppell High School and the community to experience the wonderful content that will fill the pages of this publication to commence our 25th anniversary.
With so many changes occurring online, in print and on staff, this is sure to be a year to remember. One thing I am thrilled about our publication this year is the addition of the enterprise editor, and not because this is my job. For those not well versed in the journalism field, enterprise means the more in-depth stories that are often found on the
front page and center spread of the newspaper and the featured headlines section online.
In this first issue, the front page features an exposé on the abuse of ADHD medication during standardized tests by students attempting to improve their scores and achieve their college goals, written by our student life editor junior Jena Seidemann. The center spread celebrates the 25th anniversary of The Sidekick by looking back into our history books to see where this publication began and just how much it has progressed and changed over the years, written by yours truly.
Aside from print, there will be no shortage of enterprise pieces online as they are updated daily. The featured headlines section will sport updates from big events during the week, making it a hub for students to gain access to everything from homecoming dress up themes to sports scores. The in-depth pieces printed in the newspaper and the hard-hitting stories from our news, opinions, student life, entertainment and sports sections written weekly by our staff will also have a place in this section.
In addition, our weekly vlogs (video blogs) that cover different events around the school and community and get students and faculty connected to our publication will be featured in this section.
We are only six weeks into the school year, and I have already been blown away by the content our staff has produced. From the on-the-spot reporting demonstrated by staff writer junior Summer Crawford as she covered the Friday Night Fights held by the National Taekwondo Association to the controversial opinion piece written about Christianity influencing school activity by staff writer senior George Fairchild, our staff has been working hard to challenge themselves to ensure the best stories are generated for our readers and viewers to enjoy.
With such a strong start to the school year, I am excited to see what other in-depth, enterprise stories our staff takes on and records. However, I am most thrilled for the opportunity to share them both online and in print with our viewers throughout the year and beyond.
