The Arctic Monkeys have done it again with the release of their fifth album, AM (anagram for Arctic Monkeys.)
The British rock band definitely delivered well to their audience, with dropping the first single of AM, “R U Mine?” in February 2012. It was such a tease. The other two singles “Do I Wanna Know?” and “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” were released periodically this past summer. The singles are asking simple questions, and they all make genius songs.
With “R U Mine?” sounding like standard rock, but nevertheless totally Arctic Monkeys style, the other two singles “Do I Wanna Know?” and “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” are so different. They are soulful in a sultry way, almost bluesy.
Lead singer Alex Turner is known for his rustic voice and style. Turner is considered to be “England’s Elvis.” His Sheffield accent lingers with every lyric and it is so addictive. Rumors of him losing his British accent are simply rubbish to me; listen to AM and you can surely hear that it is still there and hopefully for good.
There are some songs that take you back in time, or put you in a different setting. With Turner’s voice and the rest of the bands riffs, you feel like you are in Grease days riding a Harley through the city. It may be the “shoo wops” in their new song “I Want It All,” or it might just be an association with Turner’s new look, being as he is “channeling his inner Elvis”, and may I say that it is working.
The Arctic Monkeys have shown to grow and evolve with every album. With sold out shows all over Europe, they have set the bar high for themselves now and I know they will play to please.
