The Coppell Cowboys beat the Keller Indians 33-13 to extend their season at least one more week. The Cowboys played a close game against the Indians until the fourth quarter when they scored 16 un-answered points to close out the game.
The Cowboys will play Plano East next week at Cowboy stadium again but at 11 am this time. The time change will be an interesting factor considering that it will be the Cowboys earliest game of the year.
However tonight, the Cowboys started off slow in the first, scoring zero points and letting Keller believe they were still in the game. In the second quarter, the Cowboys were able to score 14 points before surrendering Keller’s first touchdown of the game.
Then right before the half, senior quarterback Hayden Hawk led a drive deep into Keller territory before having Sophomore Nick Jordan successfully nail a 30 yard field goal.
That should have given the Cowboys momentum going into halftime and the second half, but the third quarter was completely controlled by the Indians. Keller ate eight minutes of clock before settling for a field goal to cut the lead to ten points, then got a turnover on a Hawk fumble. They also turned that turnover into a field goal, but those would be their final points of the game.
Once only up by four points, the Cowboys started to work hard. In the fourth quarter, Coppell had a successful drive ending in a 24 yard junior Cam McDaniel touchdown run. McDaniel finished the game with 143 yards on 19 carries, 26 yards recieving on five catches and four rushing touchdowns, again to carry the Cowboy offensive load.
The Cowboys hopefully look to continue their success next weekend against a Plano East team that defeated Irving MacArthur in overtime 27-26.
A wrap up of the days playoff match-ups around district 6-5A are the following. Southlake Carroll 55-7 over Colleyville Heritage, Trinity 88-27 over Flower Mound, and Flower Mound Marcus 48-18 over Grapevine.
