The Cowboy rally came up just short Monday night in their season opener at Plano East in a 62-49 loss. New head coach Kit Pehl lost his first game as a member of the Cowboy basketball coaching staff.
Junior guard Cody Carver paced the Cowboys with 16 points. Point guard Landon Goesling, a junior transfer from Bakersfield, California, also chipped in 15 points and 6 assists for Coppell in his first game as a Cowboy.
Coppell only trailed by 10 points at halftime, 40-30, but couldn’t make up the deficit in the second half. Shots were not falling the Cowboys’ way, and Plano East’s guard play, particularly seniors Marcus Mathieu and Chico Morales, accounted for 22 of the Wildcats 62 points.
The Cowboys play their next trio of games in the San Antonio Northside ISD Tournament, depending how they play, from Thursday until Saturday.
