After a thrilling overtime victory against the top-ranked Allen Eagles last Friday at Buddy Echols Field, the Coppell Cowboys leapfrogged a plethora of state-powers and now sit at the second spot in the MaxPreps Texas state rankings.
Coppell has been ranked as high as tenth in the area, but its No. 2 ranking behind DeSoto is the highest in school history.
“It’s the highest we have been since I have been here,” head coach Joe McBride said. “In 2010, I think we were No. 4 and in 2009, we were somewhere around five.”
Although the Eagles did suffer their first defeat, Allen only slipped down one spot to No. 3 in the state.
The Cowboys also leapfrogged a whopping 52 spots in the MaxPreps national rankings to No. 14, just behind New Jersey perennial powerhouse Don Bosco Preparatory.
Coppell shares the top of the list with the likes of top programs such as Katy (fifth), Mesquite (sixth) and Skyline (seventh). But McBride knows that the team has to keep on their toes if retaining the second overall ranking is a long term goal.
Senior quarterback Colby Mahon said that the expectations for a team ranked among the highest in the state are lofty, but the Cowboys will meet them like a “six-feet thick steel vault”.
The Cowboys head into their bye week on a high, but a matchup with a tough Hebron team waits on the other side.
Coppell football program hosts staff appreciation breakfast
To show gratitude for all that they do for the athletes at Coppell, coach McBride, along with players and coaches, will be serving breakfast tacos and juice Friday morning starting at 7:30 a.m.
The breakfast will be served in the upstairs teachers’ lounge in the B hallway. If you cannot attend the breakfast due to tutoring or any other reason, Coach McBride wants you to let him know as he will send a group of students to deliver tacos and juice to your room.
