After a dominating victory against the Rockwall Yellowjackets winning 40-3, the Coppell Cowboys’ focus shifts to their next game against the Garland Owls on Friday night.
The Cowboys are coming in to the game with an impressive 3-0 record behind the leadership of senior quarterback Colby Mahon and junior defensive end Solomon Thomas.
The Owls have recorded a 0-3 record so far this year and have been blown-out in almost every game. Garland has no clear threat in the offense and the defense for Coppell should flourish in this game.
The Cowboys are not thinking this game as an easy victory, but it will hopefully give them the opportunity to please the homecoming crowd and prepare for their game against the nationally-ranked Allen Eagles next week.
Mahon says the focus of the offense is to just focus on improving both offense and defense.
The offense is hoping to build on its dominance of opponents this season and turn their attack onto the Eagles. The Eagles have given up an average of 329 yards a game.
This spells good news for the Mahon and the offense that have exploited weaknesses of all defenses this year.
Even though Garland does not pose that much of a challenge for Coppell, the team still has goals for the night.
Ball security, offensive and defensive execution, and victory are what the team hopes to accomplish this week Mahon said.
Blake Mahon sees first action versus Rockwall
While his brother, Colby, threads the football in between opposing defenses, junior tight end Blake Mahon waits patiently on the sideline to sub in. Though he beat out junior Nick Johnston for the backup spot, he still finds himself trapped behind 6’2″ senior Josh Self.
When he got his first action last Friday, he was so excited that he missed a key block on a running play. He was immediately subbed out and given a harsh tongue-lashing by head coach Joe McBride.

WR Smith snags eighth in district receiving
Senior wide receiver Cameron Smith sits in eighth position in the district with 13 catches for 297 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Ever since a break out performance in Coppell’s first game against Longview, where Smith caught four balls for 154 yards and two touchdowns, opposing corners have rendered invisible when he lines up on their side.
