Last year, Coppell High School welcomed numerous new and inventive clubs, from Ping Pong Club to Scrabble Club to Coppell Film Society. This year, CHS has carried on that tradition with numerous new clubs that appeal to students ranging from up- and- coming fashionistas and budding politicians to those who just like to get together and decorate their own TOMS. Teachers and students took the initiative to band together and create clubs that best fit their combined interests, such as the former Apparel teacher, Becky Richards, as the sponsor of the Coppell á la mode fashion club and Angela Binder, a Physics teacher, as sponsor to the Earth and Space Science club.
Senior Amrita Kamboj- Earth and Space Science Club
Where did you get the idea to start the Earth and Space Science Club?
It was actually [Physics and Geology, Meteorology and Oceanography teacher] Mrs.Binder’s idea; she is in love with space. She wanted to start it to spread awareness about her GMO class, which will be called Earth and Space Science next year.
How long have you been interested in Earth and Space Science (ESS)?
I had Mrs. Binder for physics last year, and we watched a recruiting video for ESS and it seemed interesting. I think space is awesome and so mysterious, and the class that goes along with it has been really interesting and great so far.
What activities are you planning on doing throughout the year?
We are planning field trips, such as one during Spring Break, where we would go camping all over East Texas. There’s a museum there and we would also go into caves, hike mountains and see craters.
The Earth & Space Science club meets in Mrs. Angela Binder’s room, B224. The club has thus far met on Monday mornings and Tuesday afternoons, and will try to continue this pattern, aside from separate documentary viewings which will be scheduled at different times throughout the year. For more information, you can contact Mrs. Binder at [email protected], or president Amrita Kamboj or vice president Krysia Garcia through Facebook.
Senior Blake Seitz- the Politics Club
Where did you get the idea to start the Politics Club?
I’ve been interested in politics for awhile, and I was dissatisfied with the lack of political awareness of teens, so I figured a club would increase the political awareness of students and reform or expand the role of student government in the high school.
How long have you been interested in politics?
Not that long actually, got into it about a year ago. One day, I woke up and got into it, defined my political beliefs and ever since then it’s been C-SPAN and the political web site, Politico.
What activities are you planning on doing throughout the year?
We hope to foster political debates in a tolerant and scholarly environment. Later on, we hope we’ll debate issues and talk about how to get involved and volunteer at different political events.
The Politics club meets every other Wednesday in Mr. Michael Brock’s room, B205. For more information, you can contact Mr. Brock at [email protected], or president Blake Seitz through Facebook.
Junior Sarah Hillier- TOMS Club
Where did you get the idea to start the TOMS Club?
TOMS has a program called Campus Representatives, where you sign up to represent TOMS at your school. I applied during the spring and got accepted during the summer, and part of the program is to start a club to spread the word.
How long have you been interested in TOMS?
For about two or three years, I found out about them at camp and got interested.
What activities are you planning on doing throughout the year?
We are planning this party called “Style Your Sole” where we all get together and paint our TOMS. Also, we are going to partner up with Lake Dallas High School and have a Barefoot Walk where we will encourage everyone to walk a mile or so barefoot, in order to let people get a walk in the shoes of those in South America, Africa and other places who are not able to afford shoes.
The TOMS club will meet in Mrs. Melissa Arnold’s room, C209, almost every other Monday after school. If you are interested in learning more about the club, you may contact Mrs. Arnold at [email protected] or junior presidents Sarah Hillier and Lydia White through Facebook.
Junior Viviana Trevino- Coppell á la mode fashion Club
Where did you get the idea to start the Coppell á la mode club?
My friend [junior Emily Gossett] and I really like fashion, and we wanted to make clothes. I figured that others love that too and are interested in fashion, runway shoes and photography, so I thought starting a club would be a good idea.
How long have you been interested in fashion?
Pretty much all my life, since I was about 4. It’s basically because my mom loves fashion and used to dress me up when I was little. I’ve tried to make my own clothes, but have never completed it, so maybe we can try to in the club.
Where are your favorite places to shop?
Forever 21 is my favorite place to shop, I get pretty much all my clothes there.
What activities are you planning on doing throughout the year?
Our biggest goal is to have a big runway show for everybody to see at the end of the year. We will probably meet once a month on Saturdays and make clothes for two hours. Also, I’m planning on the club having photo shoots on the weekends sometimes, and then I’d place the photos on Facebook.
The Coppell a la mode club meets every other Wednesday in Mrs. Becky Richards’ room, A106. To learn more about the club, you may contact Mrs. Richards at [email protected], or junior president Viviana Trevino through Facebook.
