Media’s portrayal of candidates leads to skewed political perception

Michelle Pitcher
Editor-in-Chief

There are some strange things happening in the world of politics nowadays. Now more than ever we must remain aware of what is going on in our government. If we fail to do our duties, we may just end up with a cat in Senate.

There is a house cat in Virginia who is a contender for such a position, and his campaign has caused quite the stir. “Hank for Senate” shirts, bumper stickers and yard signs are being purchased across the country, and the web is abuzz with updates on Hank’s platform.

Earlier in the year, I made a resolution to become more aware of the political climate in my country, to try to identify with the candidates and form a semblance of an identity for myself. However, the more I research, the more I realize how lightly some Americans take political issues. Rather than focusing on their platform as a reason to oppose a candidate, we attack aspects of their personalities, calling them insane or uneducated or racist. Whenever a candidate makes a mistake, we brand them as unworthy, shaming them until they withdraw from the race. A little bad press goes a long way.

It is my opinion that having a feline senator is not the worst thing that could happen in this year’s elections. Stay aware, and stay classy, CHS.
