Tuesday night the Coppell Cowgirls hosted the annual Dig for the Cure match against the Lewisville Fighting Farmers. Coppell won in three games 25-16, 25-14, and 25-19, and never had much trouble controlling the match from the start.
The game opened with a photo of the two teams with pink “Dig for the Cure” t-shirts on. The photo represented unity and togetherness before the match.
“I think us lining up with Lewisville for a photo was a special moment.” Coach Sherri Hankins said. “It showed the togetherness we both have in fighting for breast cancer awareness and research.”
Also before the game each of the team captains read a short statement about Dig for the Cure. It contained the mission statement, thanks and praise for all the people who donated to this cause, and honoring everyone who struggled and struggles with cancer. It was a great way to start off the game and set a respectful tone for the game.
Dig for the Cure is a simple fundraiser for the Susan G. Koman foundation of Dallas breast cancer research. This was started three years ago by Laurie MacNamara. Her impact is still felt at the school that started Dig for the Cure.
“Laurie paved the way for this fundraiser to be successful at CHS.” Senior Shelby Tamura said. “It is a great cause.”
Tamura also lead the charge for the fundraiser this year with the majority of the teams digs which totalled 71. Eight more then the previous years total from the game.
“To get even more digs than we did last year is a great sign.” Senior Taylor Meade said after the game. “It’s really encouraging each year we raise our play to help this great cause.”
More encouraging news came to the Cowgirls after their feel good win.
Flower Mound had defeated Marcus and Southlake Carroll had beaten Hebron, which meant Coppell was in a two way tie for first alongside Hebron. The importance of Friday’s game against Flower Mound could mean a first place or second place district finish for the Cowgirls.
“We just have to play our game.” Senior Kelsey Preston said. “If we can stick with our game plan then we can beat Flower Mound, and maintain first place in district.”
The Cowgirls as mentioned before play away at Flower Mound Friday night in what should be another intense 6-5A match up.
