Last time the Cowboys held the No. 1 spot in the area, the Southlake Carroll Dragon trounced them, 8-1, sending a message through the Coppell clubhouse that was loud and clear.
Since the embarrassing defeat, the squad has stringed together seven straight district victories. And now the boys are back atop the ranks after returning the favor to the Dragons last Friday.
Battling through the windy weather, Coppell faced District-7-5A leader and it’s ace in a game Coppell badly wanted. After falling behind 5-2 in the first four frames, the Cowboys took their first lead by scoring four runs in the fifth inning.
With clutch hits by Sam Swinton and Craig Aiken to tie up the game in the seventh, Coppell was able to roll in the eight by allotting four runs, sealing up the victory. The Dragons added two in the bottom frame, but Coppell held on for an 11-9 win.
Coppell (9-2) still sits second to Carroll (10-2) in the district standings, but have managed to grab the top spot in the metroplex.
Tonight the boys have a home game against Saginaw at 7:00 p.m.
