Thanksgiving break is here, and not a minute too soon. However, part of me feels like what I look forward to the most about Thanksgiving break is not Thanksgiving itself, but rather the time off from school. Which is quite saddening when you think about it. A break is given honoring a defining American holiday, but rather than the excitement being focused on the time spent with loved ones and self reflection of what I am thankful for, it lies primarily in the fact that I will get some much needed downtime from school.
I think the focus should be switched. Rather than seeing this week as a break, I will try to incorporate the “thanks” of Thanksgiving. I hope you will too. Sometimes it is easy to let school overwhelm us and blur our vision from the moments and opportunities in life to exhibit our inate humanity. But it is possible to rise above such inticing traps. In fact you may have helped an entire family and not even realized it, due to the Turkey Drive Coppell High School hosted today, November 19th. This was a great way to exhibit our thankfulness and give others the opportunity to give thanks for something. Actions such as a turkey drive and community service, or even simply spending time with loved ones are great ways to fully experience what life has to offer. Because schoolwork is important, but there are unseen things that sholastic education cannot offer and must be searched for elsewhere. So take this break to search. Take a moment for yourself and for others and use this Thanksgiving break to give yourself deeper insight and closer relationships. Then on Thursday, wherever you are, whatever you may be indulging in, and whoever you may be with, give thanks.
