On May 17, 2009, Mojang released one of the best selling games of all time. Minecraft was given to the world and widely accepted by players all over the globe. Fifteen years after the game’s original release, A Minecraft Movie reminds old players of fond memories and creates new ones.
The film follows Steve, played by Jack Black, who goes through the Nether Portal as a kid and gets stuck in the world of Minecraft. Along with Steve come Garrett, Henry, Natalie and Dawn. These characters are random people to Steve that just happen to accidentally go through the nether portal, without knowing what lies beyond.
The casting initially received negative reaction when revealed. But once you watch the movie, you see just why each actor was chosen for their character. They all bring big personalities to the table, with each character being over the top and charismatic.
A Minecraft Movie uses the wide world of creativity from the original game and applies it directly to the film.
What makes this movie so interesting is the diverse appeal. Anybody could find an element about this movie they enjoy, whether it be the physical set, comedic humor or battle scenes.
Although A Minecraft Movie has major parts not relating to the original game, the interesting and creative twists added to the film make up for the lack of material used. The events leading up to the climax are so wacky, yet work so well due to the creative nature of Minecraft.
The visual effects that A Minecraft Movie uses are stunning. Film director Jared Hess really brought Minecraft to life with this movie. Not only the terrain but every animal and mob from the game was given its original blocky shapes but with a more realistic approach. At first it may look strange, but with the setting around them, it looks flawless.
A Minecraft Movie effectively exhibits itself as a movie anybody can watch. Even if you’ve never played the game itself, viewers find it easy to discover an aspect of the movie that they can connect to. Players that grew up with Minecraft will find it even easier, seeing this beloved game come to life.
