On April 3, residents were shocked to learn Coppell ISD Superintendent Dr. Brad Hunt announced his retirement.
The CISD Board of Trustees will discuss the search process of naming a new superintendent as well as an intermediary superintendent on Wednesday.
According to CISD Board of Trustees president David Caviness, the board will explore items including an official retirement date, timeline for hiring Hunt’s replacement and inserting a possible interim superintendent.
Dr. Hunt believes CISD will be in good hands after his retirement.
“The board is going to find someone that will take my place and do a great job, probably even better than me,” Dr. Hunt said. “I’m very confident in the board’s ability to hire the next superintendent since they are an outstanding group of men and women and they’re going to find just the right person to take my place.”
The naming of a new superintendent could lead to several changes in CISD, creating uncertainty throughout the district.
“We’re all a little nervous about that because you’re used to the same person and you’ve hit your stride with them,” Coppell High School Principal Laura Springer said. “I hope it doesn’t change the relationship piece of who we are as Coppell.”
According to Springer, Coppell citizens hope that the new superintendent will prioritize students and faculty, continuing the lasting impact of community building while also possessing qualities of exemplary leadership.
“It’s going to need to be somebody that’s willing to really look at things quickly and listen to important people that know more about what’s going on,” Springer said. “They have to make decisions that are kid-centered, even if we don’t shut schools, even if we keep losing enrollment.”
