On a cold, windy Friday afternoon at Bear Creek Golf Club in Grapevine, the Coppell girls golf team were battling conditions vying to win district and advance to regionals.
On a beautiful warm Saturday morning, the Cowgirls were in cruise control to win the District 5-6A Championship with a score of 600.
“A lot of teams need pristine conditions to play well because golf is such a mental sport,” Coppell coach Gary Beyer said. “It was blowing 30 miles per hour and it was cold on Friday, but it switched on Saturday and it was 85 degrees.”
On March 25-26, the Cowgirls won their fifth district championship and first since 2021. Beyer has a strong feeling that this team has the best shot to win it all.
“I have seen this group develop over a couple years,” Beyer said. “Being able to have the privilege to get athletes that only focus on one sport allows for their development technically.”
One of the elite athletes is junior Alicia Bellendir, who won the individual District 5-6A championship after shooting 136 over the two rounds.
“Alicia is one of the elite players in the state,” Beyer said. “She was second team all-state last year, and she’s playing like it this whole year, but especially this semester, she’s playing at a ridiculously high level.”
With the Cowgirls scoring a total of 600, defeating Lewisville Flower Mound by 22 strokes, confidence is high with the Conference 6A Region I Golf Regional Tournament at Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie on April 14-15, Beyer expects a top three finish to take the Cowgirls to state.
“The girls playing on varsity this year are playing at an exceedingly high level,” Beyer said. “They have one goal in mind, and they compete like that.”
