Jan. 2. The first match of the season. The Coppell girls soccer team against the Lake Travis girls soccer team.
The Cowgirls won that match, 4-0.
April 12. Birkelbach Field in Georgetown. 4 p.m. The Cowgirls (21-2-3) and the Cavaliers (22-1-1). The last match of the season.
This time, for the Class 6A Region I State Championship.
“I think it’s funny and unique that we get to end the season in a state championship against Coppell,” Lake Travis coach Will Maloney said. “I imagine that hasn’t happened very much in the history of the UIL.”
A state championship that will be one to remember for both programs.
For Coppell, a chance to break a 10-year drought and a chance for a third championship.
“From the get-go it has been the same goal,” Coppell coach Craig Able said. “We felt like we had the talent, the personnel and the heart for it, however, it is a tough goal and I am proud of them.”
For Lake Travis, it is an opportunity to not only win its first state championship, however, prove that it can produce in the big games. The Cavaliers have had four state championship appearances, however, have never produced a championship.
“I wouldn’t call it pressure, but I would say there’s an expectation within Lake Travis,” Maloney said. “We work hard to make sure that we’re coming out and putting our best effort in and making sure that we are showing well and I think the girls have embraced that pressure or that expectation and it’s obviously paying off now.”
With the extra pressure as well as a coveted Class 6A trophy on the line, strategies will be in full effect.
With both teams scoring 113 goals this season, Coppell has 13 goals conceded while Lake Travis has conceded 18.
“We know it’s going to be a battle,” Able said. “There are lots of similarities. We know they’re super talented. They’ve got a lot of forwards and midfield players that score a lot of goals. So we’ve got to be able to contain those goals.”
With the goal scoring prowess of both teams, defense will be a strong focus.
“They’re a powerhouse,” Maloney said. “We played them earlier in the season, so we know what to expect, and we know the talent that Coppell has as a team. They’re really well coached. We’re going to focus on making sure that we are very strong defensively. We know the threats that Coppell has in their front three and so making sure we’re aware of that and again, continue to still do our thing offensively.”
The final match of the year will feature the Cowgirls seeking to complete its season’s goal and the Cavaliers look for revenge and their first state championship in the biggest game.
