Coppell Smart City Board convened to discuss emerging city-wide inclusive planning strategies for Vision 2040 on Monday. The main focus of the meeting was artificial intelligence exploration and the potential role it could play in Coppell’s Vision 2040.
Board members discussed the growing presence of AI in both public and private sectors, mentioning models such as ChatGPT, Claude, Super Grok and Google Gemini. They noted these platforms could be used to improve communication, generate ideas and support data driven decision-making in city governance.
A proposal included a hackathon event, originally generated by Super Grok AI, where Coppell residents, staff and local tech enthusiasts would have the opportunity to work together to solve municipal challenges through coding and creative problem-solving.
The goal of the event would be to tighten community involvement while manipulating technology to address issues such as traffic, sustainability and accessibility.
“Out of all the different models and softwares of AI that we tested, we found Super Grok’s results to be the most innovative and doable,” Smart City Board member Joe Mecca said.
The board emphasized the importance of including students in city planning for Vision 2040. Leaders expressed interest in working with students from Coppell High School and New Tech High @ Coppell, integrating their senior projects into real-world initiatives supporting civic development.
“Utilizing the students at local high schools would give them an opportunity to have hands-on experience while simultaneously helping the city tap into fresh perspective and innovative thinking,” Smart City Board youth adviser Amelia Menezes said.
Beyond technology, the board addressed changing demographics of Coppell, highlighting the need to make the city more welcoming to both young adults and the elderly.
Discussions included potential strategies to improve accessibility, expand recreation, expand transportation options and create spaces where residents of all ages feel connected and supported.
