As they take their next steps into adulthood, high school students need to learn useful skills beyond those in the setting of high school such as financial literacy, basic cooking and cleaning skills and time management. To combat unfamiliarity of essential life skills needed in adulthood, Coppell High School conducted Adulting Day on Thursday.
During Adulting Day, seniors attend sessions of their choice hosted by community and staff members to prepare them for responsibilities after high school such as money management, purchasing a home, car maintenance, self defense and cooking.
Senior Srishti Behera attended the Cooking and Meal Planning session where she learned about grocery shopping and weekly food preparation.
“As someone who wants to get a meal plan, there’s times where I have to do grocery shopping, so it will be helpful to know how I should grocery shop, how often I have to do it and what exactly I need to get,” Behera said.
The All About Personal Taxes session included information about auto insurance, home insurance, life insurance and other insurance plans. Senior Bhavana Palla thinks this knowledge will benefit her in the long run.
“It helped me get informed about what kind of insurances are there and what insurance covers,” Palla said. “I am going to be using that to select my plan so that I can save more money and be safe l when I am driving.”
Astronomy teacher Angela Barnes hosted the Yoga and Meditation session, inspiring students to bring mindfulness into their lives beyond high school. In this session, students recognized the importance of yoga through stretching, strength and cool down exercises.
“I want to show them that in 10 minutes of stretching, getting up and moving, the outlook that you have is much better,” Barnes said.
