On Monday evening, the Coppell Smart City Board gathered to discuss and review various ideas to propose to the city council. These ideas were presented and each member was given the opportunity to speak.
The meeting started with various technology driven options for repurposing the warehouse district. Some options were entertainment centers, drone schools and green electric grids.
This moved into discussing the possibility of incorporating the urban air mobility experience into Vision 2040. Vision 2040 is the plan for the community’s future. An urban air mobility experience is a system using small electric aircraft to move people and cargo within cities. The board decided to add this to its proposal.
“Water conservation is important because our consumption levels are going to go up as more and more residents come in,” Smart City Board member Deepak Jayavant said.
Jayavant discussed water conservation and how the Smart City Board might suggest to the city council ways to help promote the conservation of water, which would also help save money since Coppell pays for water.
The topic of saving money led into a potential proposal for a micro grid. This micro grid is a small localized electric grid which can operate independently. Micro grids usually generate renewable energy on site and would help save money and protect the environment. However, some board members disagreed with the proposal since micro grids are usually used for smaller areas like college campuses.
During the meeting, some of their ideas were compared to other smart city boards from different cities, such as Chula Vista, Calif. In fact, a key point in the meeting was “potentially establishing a technology centric partnership with the DFW innovation center and other sister cities,” said Jayavant. This would be helpful in sharing common ideas, and giving recommendations to improve technology wise.
“It’s an exciting time with all the new technology happening, it’s great that Coppell has these boards and provides input and then brings it to the council to better our city,” board member Viraf Patel said.
