School of the Week is a student life series featuring a different Coppell ISD school and an event unique to that school, rotating weekly.
The hallways of Lakeside Elementary School echo with cheerful laughter as children run through the campus, paint artfully smeared across their faces.
On Feb. 1, Lakeside held its annual carnival and silent auction. The event brought students, parents and community volunteers together to celebrate while raising funds for school programs. Lakeside’s school carnival raises funds for field trips and programs.
“This carnival is a great way for our parents and community volunteers to come together,” Lakeside Elementary PTO sponsor Tess Heimann said. “We have amazing community members who have donated gifts to this carnival and have been sponsors for the event.”
The event featured face painting, musical chairs, mini golf, spin the wheel, a cake walk and various other activities. Coppell community members and high school volunteers played an active role in running the booths, helping ensure the event was a success.
“We’re doing this for one of our other clubs, so it is definitely a responsibility for me at least,” senior National Art Honor Society president Amanda Zhu said. “But, this is one of the more fun ones because you get to meet a lot of fun little kiddos, interact with them, and at the same time, you get to give back.”
For many high school volunteers, the carnival is not just an opportunity to help but also a chance to relive their own childhood memories at similar events. The interactive and festive atmosphere allowed many to connect with younger students while also giving back to their community.
“Honestly, it’s mostly about meeting the individual people,” senior NAHS secretary Sahana Peechara said. “I get really wrapped up in my own head a lot, so it’s nice to see kids like I used to be having fun at events like this—it just makes me want to make their day better, and it makes my day better, too.”
With the support of local businesses, parent volunteers and CHS students, the carnival had a widespread community turnout, raising money for the support and enrichment of student experiences throughout the year.
