On Tuesday, the Coppell boys basketball team defeated Frisco Centennial, 75-59, at CHS Arena.
“I feel like in spurts, we did a really good job of playing to our strengths and playing what we have been working on every day,” Coppell coach Ryan Murphy said. “So the key to success for us is making sure that we are consistent and disciplined on the things that we have been working on, and I see a lot of progress toward that.”
Coppell dominated the first half. With two seconds left, senior guard/front Jaxon Lowe makes the last shot of the second quarter, extending Coppell’s lead to 43-23.
At the beginning of the second half however, Frisco Centennial began to pick up the pace and close the gap.
“The whole third quarter was kind of an example of us going back to old bad habits, and the ball stopped moving as well,” Murphy said.
Despite this shaky start, Coppell still maintained its lead throughout the second half. Junior guard Sibusiso Ncube-Socks opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, helping the Cowboys maintain momentum for the rest of the game.
“Personally, I think I attacked mismatches and just took over shots well,” Ncube-Socks said.
According to Murphy, there were two significant moments keeping Coppell in the lead.
“The five guys who started the game were really focused and came out of the game with great intent and great energy,” Murphy said. “The other moment was probably the beginning of the second quarter where our lead stretched significantly over those first four minutes with the [team] playing with a lot of energy.”
