On Tuesday night, the Coppell City Council voted 6-1 to deny the development of the Lake Breeze Condominiums, a four-story, 71-unit housing development by South Belt Line Road and Sanders Loop.
The condominiums would have included 32 two-bedroom units with a minimum of 1,300 square feet and 39 three-bedroom units with a minimum of 1,600 square feet. Proposed exterior amenities include a dog park, a fire pit with seating, a butterfly garden and two flex sport/game areas.
Residential units would occupy the ground floor, second floor and fourth floor. The third floor will be in line with the DART Silver Line station.
The council approved the slight increase in Solid Waste Collection Fees, from $19.33 to $19.91 per month starting Jan. 1. This means residents will pay an additional 58 cents monthly, or an additional $6.96 yearly.
The council also considered House Bill 2439, which limits government authority to regulate building materials.
“I don’t believe this is something the city should put on our legislative priorities to go back to the dark ages and restrict the material properties,” council member Mark Hill said.
The council ended the meeting by discussing the Make a Child Smile program the city sponsors to donate gifts to deserving children in Coppell ISD. This year, the City of Coppell was able to provide gifts for 277 children.
“We really do appreciate all the support from the community. Parents were coming in with their small children, talking about how excited they were to be able to bring a gift so someone else can have the joy of the holidays,” city manager Mike Land said.
Correction: The original version of this story reported that the council approved the Lake Breeze Condominiums. This is the corrected version of the story reporting that it was not approved by the council.
