Enclosed in a room, students dressed in red eagerly wait in anticipation, excited to perform for the crowd of guests in monotone outfits.
On Saturday, Coppell High School Cowboy Theater hosted its inaugural Black and White Gala and Silent Auction at Aloft Dallas Hotel in Coppell.
The event began at 6 p.m. where guests and performers were provided with a buffet to start the night.
Coppell theater students showcased their pieces to be performed at the Texas Thespian Festival on Nov. 15-18.
“The performances went really well and I’m really proud of the work that everyone’s put in,” sophomore Samantha Gelman said. “My favorite part is just watching everything come together for an event that we’ve been waiting for for so long and just seeing all our hard work pay off.”
The students are motivated and passionate in achieving their goals.
“I’m so happy and proud of the kids,” theater director Glenn Price said. “It just shows a lot of the work that we’ve been doing in the theater department and we just plan to excel and take it to the next level in everything we do.”
To fundraise for the Coppell theater program, a silent auction was held. QR codes were provided for guests to bid on various items.
“The guests are notified if they get outbid and are able to place a higher bid by the end of the evening if they want,” Coppell Theater booster board volunteer Kendra Dwyer said. “Then we’ll close the auction and announce the winners and people will go home with their items.”
According to Dwyer, the majority of the profits of the auction will go towards the “Matilda” musical planned for production this year.
Freshman William Crawford performed “Revolting Children” and “When I Grow Up” from “Matilda” with fellow cast members.
“I felt very confident while performing the pieces,” Crawford said. “ The songs we did were two of my favorite songs from the show and I think it went really well tonight.”
The event left a lasting impression on both the performers and guests.
“I think the gala was a really good success,” sophomore Akshita Gunasekaran said. “It was our first ever gala and I think we all did pretty well and it was really fun to try something new.”
