CHS9 student Esha Polishetty is a member of the student council executive board. Planning to participate in DECA throughout high school, Polishetty aims to improve her public speaking skills and implement community service opportunities within student council.
How did you react when you found out that you had been elected?
I was honestly surprised because I didn’t expect to win. Then, once the feeling sank in that I won, I was really excited and then the ideas just started flowing.
Why did you want to join the student council executive board?
I feel like the things the executive board did really interested me. I like having a leadership role and planning things for CHS9. I knew that out of all the clubs I’m in, if I wanted to run for a role, it would be in StuCo.
What were your campaign strategies?
Rather than hanging up posters, I spread the word around and told people, “I’m running for student council – here’s why you should vote for me.” With posters, you see it but it doesn’t really influence people. If you go tell them why they should vote, they’ll understand and remember what you told them when they actually vote.
What do you want to add to student council this year?
I want more opportunities for all of us to get involved in different things that can get the students engaged. I want to plan opportunities for people to get involved around the school and the community. I’m still thinking of different ideas, such as volunteer events.
What legacy would you like to leave on both CHS9 and student council?
I want to make a change within StuCo. I want the future classes to want to join StuCo and want to run for leadership positions. I want them to enjoy the things that they do in the club and around the school to make it an engaging environment. I want everyone to have opportunities to meet new people and make changes.
What are you most excited for within student council for the 2024-25 school year?
I’m most excited to improve my speaking skills in large groups because I’m doing DECA and being in this leadership role can help me in the future, within the business part of that club. For example, we have a unity dinner, which we need to speak at, and we speak at the pep rallies as well. I feel like it can make me overcome the fear of speaking in front of people.
What do you think your future in student council will look like at CHS?
Being elected for the executive board has given me confidence to run for StuCo in the future and for a higher position and CHS StuCo. If I enjoy my experience on the executive board, I hope I can continue leading and making a change across the school.
