I slide my finger across the beaten cover of my taped up sketchbook, my hands yearning to turn the pages to where I left off last week.
It has been calling my name.
As I ponder which one of my countless pens I should use to sketch with today, a bittersweet feeling washes over me as I realize I am almost at my last page.
I started my sketchbook on July 20, 2023, and since then, I have traveled many places with it. I never miss the opportunity to have a fun sketching session, so I always carry it with me.
On Oct. 11, a week prior to my birthday, I traveled to Pennsylvania for the first time by myself. As you can imagine, traveling alone as an awkward teenager is nerve-wracking. The daunting sensation of being surrounded by strangers with no one accompanying you is distressing, to say the least.
But, all those frightening sensations were wiped away as I pulled out my mighty sketchbook and began drawing with my markers. A nearly three-hour long flight seemed like a mere 15-minute doodling session. It was like my assorted markers were designed to never detach from the pages.
The ability to have a free canvas at all times, helping you reset your mind is a powerful tool for anyone who enjoys the process of drawing, painting, collaging or journaling. Sketching allows me to express my ideas without words, something that I struggle with.
My sketchbook has transformed into a reflection of my spirit, passion and soul. Every time I flip through the tinted pages, each memory jumps out. From the long road trips to my brother’s soccer games to the cozy cafe dates, my sketchbook never fails to satisfy my creative appetite.
Whether I’m busy with completing my internship assignments or studying for another math test, I know my sketchbook will always be waiting for the moment I am ready to begin another stroke on the blank page.
