PROSPER – It is the third set and the Coppell volleyball team is at set point, leading by three. After losing the first two sets to Allen, the Cowgirls must win this set to have a chance at winning the match.
Allen calls a timeout to regroup after Coppell’s three-point run. However, this proves to be effective for Allen as it holds Coppell from set point four times and wins the set.
On Tuesday, Coppell lost to Allen, 21-25, 15-25, 24-26 at Walnut Grove High School Arena in the Class 6A Region I bi-district playoffs.
Both teams were neck and neck in the third set, neither being able to pull ahead by more than one point. However, after multiple rotation errors by Allen, Coppell seized the opportunity to set up its hitters.
With a cross-court hit by junior opposite hitter Mari Hill and a kill out of the back row by sophomore outside hitter Brooke Felix, the Cowgirls put a three-point gap between themselves and the Eagles.
Prior to the third set, Coppell coaches made a change in the lineup, adding freshman Bailey Johnson to the rotation. Johnson, in addition to sophomore middle blocker Taliah Ellis and junior setter Emma Pehl made multiple crucial blocks throughout the game.
Coppell’s defense was tested throughout the match as Allen freshman opposite hitter Maya Ogbogu and junior opposite hitter Kennedy Crayton made multiple cross-court kills, preventing the Cowgirls from making a side out.
However, Coppell sophomore defensive specialist Hailey Chew and junior defensive specialist Molly Williams kept the ball in play, digging up Ogbogu’s hits and playing out of system.
