Political advertisement after political advertisement flash across my TV as I try to watch my favorite team, the New York Jets, attempt to win (spoiler alert: they won’t). Every commercial break seems to bring a slew of the same advertisements again and again until it feels like an infinite loop.
This bombardment of advertising campaigns close to an election is normal. However, it should not be normal for outright false propaganda to be included in them.
Project 2025, a document released by The Heritage Foundation, gained traction over the summer through social media, becoming a strong talking point for many Democratic candidates arguing that if former President Donald Trump were to return to office, he would implement the doctrine. Yet, nowhere in these past few months has Trump endorsed or claimed that he would implement the policies in the document, basing this argument on hearsay.
Instead, Trump promises to implement a 10-20% tariff on foreign goods, implement tax cuts worth trillions of dollars, adopt an isolationist foreign policy, complete construction on the infamous border wall and wants abortion to be a state issue. Quite a few of his policies contradict what Project 2025 states, such as the banning or limitation of mifepristone (an abortion pill) and potential tax raises for middle-class America.
It is safe to say that Democrats using this as one of their main points of attack feels out of place and unnecessary. By continuing to push the narrative Trump wants to implement the doctrine, you only spread more misinformation.
Think about it: if blowing Project 2025 out of proportion has become one of the Democrats’ main points of attack, do they really have much else going for them? It feels rather symbolic of this election, promoting falsehoods to mask the fact that there does not seem to be much substance on either side. When our children look back in the history books, this election will not have been about who had the best policies, but who was able to wear the mask better.
I urge the great citizens of America, with precious few hours left in this election, to make one last attempt to educate yourself on the guarantees and facts coming from each candidate, letting that be what sways your vote on Election Day.
My generation does not want to be this pessimistic, especially at such a young age, so I hope my pleas do not fall on deaf ears and that we finally make steps towards greater political literacy in our country. Your vote does matter, so make sure it is an educated one.
