The sound of thunder and the screams of ghosts have the audience of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” production at the Coppell High School Ninth Grade Center at the edges of their seats.
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, CHS9 showed its fall production of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” in the Dome. The show was timed with the celebration of Halloween to present a spooky and entertaining production for audiences.
Freshman Dee Raibourn played protagonist, Ichabod Crane. Crane is a school master who is often at odds with Abraham “Brom Bones” Van Brunt, the neighborhood bully, for the affection of Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a rich farm owner. They were played by freshmen Nico Nieto and Claire McSpadeen, respectively.
“Brom Bones is a very mean character; his personality is all about being a bully,” Nieto said. “He’s very unlike me and that was the hardest part about playing him. It was so different to play a character like him and have to get into this mindset of ‘OK, I have to be angry now.”
The cast are not the only ones making this production come to life. The technicians control all sound and lighting effects, and the set designers build the props to make the scenes as realistic as they possibly can.
“When there’s thunder, the sound effects reflect that and enhance the experience for the audience,” freshman set designer Jhanvi Sureddy said. “The lighting, sound and set all come together to make the show so beautiful.”
After countless rehearsals and three shows together, the cast and crew have created unbreakable bonds.
“We will remain connected after these shows, and we have a group chat that we text in often,” freshman Harshan Jawhar said, “The best part of being in the cast was hanging out with them and building new friendships.
