With roaring parents, coaches and supporters in the seats of the Coppell volleyball team’s final home match of the season, the Cowgirls were energized and ready to play Flower Mound
However, Coppell could not match up to Flower Mound’s formidable blocking, as the Jaguars defeated the Cowgirls, 25-22, 25-21, 26-24, on Friday at CHS Arena.
The scoring went back and forth throughout the first and second sets, but the Jaguars pulled ahead late in each set, armed with a strong defense.
“We have played Flower Mound before and we knew that they are really tall and have a good block,” freshman Eraina Wilkins said. “We know that we have to get out of our regular system with our serves and we have to hit around that wall.”
The Cowgirls also fell short with their attacks.
“We are outsized by every team we play,” Coppell coach Robyn Ross said. “We do not have the height that most teams in our district have. I wish I could make the athletes in Coppell grow taller, but since I have no control over that, we just have to keep teaching them how to beat teams by outsmarting them and outplaying them in defense.”
Coppell plays at Flower Mound Marcus on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
“It was a really good game for us to try new things, especially with being more aggressive with our hits,” Wilkins said. “Flower Mound is really tough competition so it not only helped us be able to push through hard things but just motivated us to be more aggressive in the future.”
