The sound of children tapping their feet in an energetic beat echoes in Ethnique Performing Arts’s Frisco dance studio as they mimic their choreographer’s instructions.
Ethnique Performing Arts, a Bollywood dance company based in Frisco, is expanding to Coppell. Classes will be at Coppell’s recreation center, The CORE.
Ethnique’s director Erem Khan opened a studio space in Frisco last summer. To reach more people, Khan rents studio spaces across North Texas.
“Having Indian dance studios nearby is important because not too many people know about Bollywood dance,” Coppell High School sophomore Diya Gandhi said. “It shows everyone how talented and diverse Bollywood dance is.”
Khan is a professional dancer with work experience in the Indian film industry. She has worked in hit movies, such as Bajirao Mastani where she was an assistant choreographer.
After her work in the film industry, Khan choreographed for other dance companies including Arya Dance Academy, where she worked at its Coppell location. Her past Coppell teaching experience inspired her to add the location.
“The Coppell community was very inviting and I still remember the enthusiasm and dedication of students who came in to learn from me,” Khan said. “With a vast South Asian community in Coppell who are friendly and inviting, we thought it would be a great idea to come back to Coppell to teach the advanced knowledge of Indian performing arts that we have gathered over the years.”
With hopes of opening a permanent Coppell dance studio, Erem is excited to partner with The CORE.
“It would be a dream come true to open an Indian performing arts studio in Coppell,” Khan said. “Our current dance center in Coppell, The CORE, is an immaculate space and works with us efficiently. We hope to maintain a long business relationship with them.”
Ethnique offers classes to younger students in Coppell and soon classes for teens and adults.
“People who share the same passions come together and connect when they dance,” sophomore Aparna Shukla said. “Bollywood specifically is such a big and fun part of our culture.”
