On Saturday, Coppell cross country entered the Dallas Jesuit Classic at Prestonwood Polo Club in Oak Point, with the boys team finishing fourth and the girls team finishing 19th overall.
Recovering from sickness and injury that hindered last week, both teams ran missing some runners. Sophomore Maya Easterwood was one of the runners missing from the meet. Three out of the top seven girls did not run and instead focused on recovery for district.
“It is always nice to win, but with these invitational meets, it is more important the kids are running well,” coach Landon Wren said. “As a team we ran better on Saturday.”
Those who attended got in more practice to prepare for the next meet.
“They ran one of their best races of the year,” Wren said. “I was glad to have that to build off of, going into district.”
Wren prepares for district focusing strategy on understanding competition rather than making personal records.
“We don’t care so much about the times, we are aware of who is around us, who the main competition is and make sure we finish in front of them,” Wren said. “We have a team that can get us in the top three, but I think we will all be disappointed if we do not win district, like we had done the last two years.”
Coppell runs at the District 5-6A Championship at North Lakes Park Denton on Oct. 11.
