On Friday night, the Coppell football team defeated Hebron, 49-14, at Buddy Echols Field.
Homecoming spirit fills the stands of Buddy Echols Field. The cheerleaders chant and the student section cheers along enthusiastically. The crowd grows louder as senior wide receiver Harry Hassmann catches the ball and scores a 79-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 35-0.
Coppell took comtrol of the game in the first half, going into halftime leading, 35-0. Senior quarterback Edward Griffin had another strong game, scoring three touchdowns for Coppell in the first half.
“Coming off a bi-week, we have had a lot of time to prepare and so I’m just excited to come out here and compete against a good team,” Griffin said. “Everyone knew we had a job to do. It would have been easy for us to let off in the second half, but I was proud of the guys for continuing to push it.”
Wide receivers and big plays were the emphasis of the offense as there were multiple 50-plus yard touchdowns. “Both of our receivers played great. Tucker Cusano and Harry Hassmann, both of them had great nights,” Coppell coach Antonio Wiley said. “Josh Lock in the backfield had a great night and the defense all played well as a group.”
Coppell played solid defense throughout the night, shutting down Hebron’s drives only allowing two scores. Hebron junior wide receiver Drew Koster scored the first Hawks touchdown with seconds left of the third quarter and junior running back Ayson McCray Jones added the second score.
The Cowboys (4-0 overall, 1-0 in District 5-6A) play at Denton Guyer on Friday.
“We can beat anybody,” Senior linebacker Weston Polk said. “I think the key to success in this district is if we just come out and play well at the beginning, we keep that momentum rolling.”
