On Tuesday evening, Coppell City Council offered a warm welcome to Chiaka Ogbogu, family and friends as Sept. 24, 2024 was proclaimed Chiaka Ogbogu Day. Ogbogu’s contribution to her community was celebrated through this honor, with Ogbogu signing a volleyball to be held in City Hall.
Ogbogu is a 2013 Coppell High School graduate and member of the United States volleyball team, which won a silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games. She was a member of the 2020 gold medal team as well.
”In recognition of her outstanding achievements and contributions let it be known that we honor and celebrate Chiaka for her extraordinary accomplishments as a two-time Olympic champion,” Coppell Mayor Wes Mays said. “We express our deepest appreciation for the pride she has brought to Coppell.”
Coppell citizen Thomas Burrows expressed his concern for the city’s EMS system.
“My wife got lost with the EMS,” Burrows said. “You’d think they’d be able to get from one place in Coppell and then get to a hospital without ending up at the DFW Airport.”
He also discussed his issues with the street lights on Sandy Lake and Denton Tap Road not functioning or being covered by trees.
“It is basic safety,” Burrows said.
Item 6i approved an interlocal agreement with Dallas College to facilitate growing in cultural ability, as well as learning sessions for city employees with a budget of $48,000.
Candidates for Places 11-14 were considered to the Board of Trustees to the Texas Municipal League Intergovernmental Risk Pool. Coppell’s City Manager Mike Land was formally recommended for election to Place 14. Randy Chriswell as the City Manager of Wolforth for Place 11, Allison Heyward as Council Member of Schertz for Place 12 and Harlan Jefferson as the Deputy City Manager of Burleson for Place 13 were all recommended to the board.
In addition, the council informed citizens of the 41st Annual National Night Out this upcoming Tuesday, encouraging attendance. The event will consist of several block parties throughout the city to build stronger connections between police and the community for increased safety awareness.
