The Coppell volleyball team turns the match around during the third set, leading by nine. The past two sets have been won by Grapevine, making the third set a must win for the Cowgirls.
Ending the match with dominance on Heroes Night on Tuesday at Coppell High School Arena, Coppell junior opposite hitter Mari Hill leaps toward the ball, channeling her energy into spiking it over the net. The crowd erupts in screams and chants, celebrating the Cowgirls’ third win of the season, 13-25, 19-25, 25-13, 25-19, 15-10.
Attacks led by Coppell sophomore outside hitter Brooke Felix gave the Cowgirls a boost in every set during the match.
“I felt really good during the game,” Felix said. “It was kind of slow at the beginning but then we tried to pick it up as a team.”
The team is in high spirits during the fifth set, determined to win its third consecutive match. Coppell senior setter Carolina Ufret took the first hit, the Mustangs unable to receive. The crowds roared as Coppell began to accelerate in score, 4-3, 6-4, 9-6, 12-7. With one more point until victory for the Cowgirls, the crowd eagerly watches as the Mustangs fail to make a block, the set ending with the final score, 15-10.
“We fought back really well,” Coppell junior setter Emma Pehl said. “I feel like I did a really good job by playing where I was asked to and did what I needed to do to win.”
Coppell opens District 5-6A play on Friday against Hebron at CHS Arena.
“The girls did a great job of battling and it was metaphorically on hits for Heroes Night where we honor people who spend their lives battling,” Coppell coach Robyn Ross said. “They did a great job of not giving up and a great job of adjusting to what the other team was doing and figuring out a way to win.”
