After their victory against DeSoto on Senior Night, the Coppell volleyball team has high hopes for their upcoming season.
Coppell plays Grapevine on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at CHS Arena.
“I think any athlete just loves the idea of competing,” Coppell coach Robyn Ross said. “They show up and compete because it’s in their soul to want to do that, so I think just loving the sport and loving to compete is what keeps them going.”
Despite losing its first four matches, Coppell found its grip on teamwork and skill and won its last two matches. Ross has noticed improvements in the girls’ skills during matches.
”They are staying in sets longer and winning more sets,” Ross said. “Winning is nice but the fact that the girls are executing game plans better is what’s most important.”
According to Ross, ball control has allowed Coppell success during practice and games.
“We focus heavily on our ball control, which includes us controlling the ball from when we serve, when we’re receiving their serve or when they’re hitting at us,” Ross said. “We have to have way better ball control because we are so much smaller than everybody we typically play.
Although the younger team poses disadvantages, Coppell strives to play on the same level as Grapevine on Tuesday.
“You’ve got 15-year-old girls playing against 18-year-old girls and we are typically always outsized and out-aged,” Ross said. “Anytime we’re playing against girls who have done this for two or three more years than you have, it’s a huge advantage for them, so the fact that our girls are doing this well this young and this early in the season is great.”
