If you are interested in international politics and diplomacy, Model United Nations (MUN) is the club to join, with each member acting as a delegate.
With the 2024-25 school year beginning, new officers Kyna Shah, Aryaman Singh, Harshvardhan Kumar, Ayaan Haque, Tanush Krishnamurthy and Ashia Agarwal have improved plans for Coppell’s MUN conferences.
“This year, we have a full new officer team,” senior MUN president Kyna Shah said. “We’re trying to get a lot more people into the club in the beginning and trying to get them into conferences from the start because what got me and the other officers to really enjoy Model UN is going to a conference.”
Shah’s goals for this school year are to get more people involved in MUN and getting members to attend conferences from the beginning.
“We are going to make it mandatory to attend the initial conference,” junior MUN vice president Aryaman Singh said. “This would most likely be a regional competition known as the Dallas Area Model UN conference (DAMUN), where CHS students have historically been successful while getting an introductory understanding of how Model UN works.”
Both Singh and Shah agree attending a conference is the best way to learn how MUN works.
“Once you understand and go to a conference, you see how it really plays out,” Shah said. “There are rules on paper, but when you go to a conference it’s a bit different.”
The officer’s main goals for the new school year are to give members more opportunities.
“Meeting with each other and doing what they do in conferences – practice, practice, practice – just like any other club is the best way to prepare for upcoming conferences,” MUN sponsor David Poskey said. “Participating in a conference or preparing with mock conferences is important to succeed in Model UN.”
Alongside practice and participation, MUN emphasizes gaining new members and maintaining its lively environment.
“An increase in membership would make it easier for us to provide higher-level opportunities to students such as state-level competitions,” Singh said. “Our meetings are going to be the same style and we’re also going to a lot of the same conferences as last year.”
Coppell MUN’s leadership is making it a priority to make the current and incoming members feel as comfortable as possible.
“We plan to continue supporting students right before competitions by making sure they feel comfortable and prepared,” Singh said. “Our member base last year was fairly strong, which kept the club running and lively. As for supporting students before conferences, this helped boost morale by reminding members that others from CHS were there to help them.”
For the 2024-25 school year, the officers want to expand membership and encourage members to attend conferences, while maintaining the lively club atmosphere.
