It is time for the fourth game of the season and the Coppell football team is abuzz with hope as it is currently undefeated.
Coppell faces Plano West on Friday at 7 p.m. at John Clark Stadium for its first District 6-6A game.
Last week was a bye for the Cowboys, providing the team with an opportunity to rest and prepare for district play.
“It has been good,” Coppell football coach Antonio Wiley said. “We have had the chance to get some guys healthy and get into the groove of things again. During the bye week, we pushed practice times back, so that guys would have a chance to recharge their batteries and come back feeling good.”
During practice, Wiley has been working with the team to improve overall and hone in on some in-game mistakes.
“I want to see our offense limit self-inflicted wounds like pre-snap penalties,” Wiley said. “I would also like to see our defense win on the money downs which are third downs. We have worked really hard to win on first and second down but then we go and give up a big play on third down so we need to eliminate that.”
The Cowboys also look to get some big stops on defense against the Wolves and put up a stonewall in the run game.
“They are a very athletic team and can do some things really well but our job is to slow down the quarterback, try to contain him and keep him in the pocket so we can beat him from there,” Wiley said. “Offensively we need to take what they give us. They are a multi-defense team and they play hard so our job is to be efficient offensively and contain the quarterback and run game on defense.”
The Cowboys intend to bring back a win and begin their journey to the postseason to become district champions.
“Win,” Wiley said. “It is as simple as that. I want us to go out and find ways to win so that we can punch our ticket into the postseason.”
