On Friday at Buddy Echols Field, during a night marked with mist and chill, the Coppell boys soccer team tied with Flower Mound, 0-0, bringing their district record to 2-1-3 with eight matches remaining in District 6-6A.

“We came in feeling a bit iffy about Flower Mound because they have been very inconsistent with [their feats] throughout the season,” Coppell senior defender Preston Taylor said. “Ties are unsatisfying, but we took our chances. I feel like we didn’t work as hard as we could have and we made some poor decisions and passes as a team, but it’s onto the next thing now.”

During the beginning of the first half of the game, a yellow card was added to the Cowboys, which led to a free kick for Flower Mound. About 17 minutes into the match, the Cowboys were given a free kick resulting in a goal kick.

The Cowboys’ defense remained steady throughout the first half and only strengthened in the second half with notable contributions to Coppell senior midfielder Ryder Brock and Taylor.

“[Brock] won a lot of balls throughout the middle of the match and [Taylor] was playing inch perfect passes with perfect weight and spaces,” Coppell coach Stephen Morris said. “In the beginning we were like, ‘Hey, [Flower Mound] wants the ball in the air and they like the ball in the air.’ After that, we were able to get the ball in the air and be a little more aggressive.”

Friday’s match also featured Teacher Appreciation Night and players invited their teachers to watch their game, and honored them through displays of pictures and a gesture of a banner.

The Cowboys play at Plano on Monday.

“Some guys in the first round of district like to play for a tie, but we don’t, we like to play for the win,” Morris said.
