2021 Vaquero Battle bringing changes to tradition

This year, the Coppell High School swim team is resuming an annual community tradition after it was interrupted by COVID-19 last year. The Vaquero Battle started as an intersquad swim meet several years ago, where students invited teachers they wanted to honor.

As the years have passed, the battle has gradually evolved to incorporate guests into the activities, transforming the event to more of a unique Coppell tradition.

“Of the past Vaquero Battles I have been a part of, it has grown from simply inviting teachers to having other sport athletes as well as teachers compete and assist in races,” Coppell assistant David Conrad said.

New Coppell coach Amanda Ross has been taking into consideration the swimmers’ favorite activities of past battles and incorporating her background of working with elementary age swimmers to create a list of activities that will be fun and engaging for all who attend.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there will be a donation drive where the fundraisings will go directly to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
