While driving home from school I heard a song on my iPod while it was on shuffle. It was a Black Eyed Peas song and being happy that it wasn’t the over played “Boom Boom Pow” I decided to listen to it for a while before I skipped over it.
The song continue to repeat “This is the now generation, this is the generation now”. Over and over again it spoke about this is the generation where it is time to react. Then I look up and see a “Go Green” bumper sticker on the back of a giant truck. That is a little ironic I thought. The whole situation why is the concept of acting and going green so big now and not before.
Why is it time to “go green” know and not the generation previous to us? Every time I turn on the TV I always see an advertisement about going green or it is time to act. However it seems to me that the concept of going green is becoming a concept of mainstream media.
Every time I turn around I see another commercial advertising the whole going green concept and it is becoming just a way to increases buyers. It seems to be the new trend. It used to be peace and anti-war but now the cool thing is going green.
However I am not trying to say we shouldn’t go green, as our world is in desperate need for a go green attitude. But companies and fashion industries are advertising on shirts bags. In the process of making a lot of these products we are still damaging our environment.
Last year a Sidekick writer wrote a story on how peace is becoming a parody, which I completely agree with but, this year it seems that peace is out and the green attitude is in.
Some companies are taking advantage of this new trend and actually making use of it by transforming products to be better for the environment, but then there are people who are using it as a new style trend.
Many might say going green is very important as they walk around with their recycle tote bag but it seems to slip their mind when they take a 30 minute shower or leave the lights on or even drive some place that you can easily walk to.
Our environment is in desperate need for help, not a new style trend.
Good column!
