No it is not Halloween season, although you may get that impression if you walked through the halls of Coppell High School at all this week. It is in fact senior dress up week, an unofficial occasion led by the senior class.
“Our graduationg class was really close last year and we wanted to do something fun to finish out the year,” CHS 2009 graduate Danielle Romero said. “We didn’t expect it to turn into a tradition like Homecoming dress up week, but it looks like it has. I’m glad we were able to leave behind an occasion for everyone to look forward to.”
Senior Faye Womack has actually directed the occasion this year. She created a Facebook group in order to inform the entire senior class of the event and themes of each day. After much planning, it has turned into a success.
“It was a lot of work, but it was fun,” Womack said. “I love planning out events like this and getting creative. I looked back on last year’s themes so I could get ideas on what would be appropriate for this year. We tried to think out of the box and not copy last year’s themes.”
Each day had its own unique theme. The week was kicked off with a very colorful Neon theme. Think 80’s day without the voluminous hairstyles and plastic jewelry. Girls went all out and dressed in their brightest attire.
“I didn’t know what to think when I looked up and saw the whole senior bridge a blinding mix of neon colors,” said junior Catherine Griffith.
Tuesday, May 25 was the annual senior class breakfast and awards assembly. Students dressed their best for the event before changing into Nike shorts and t-shirts for the senior skip day tradition of going to Six Flags Over Texas theme park in Arlington.
“I had planned on going to the lake with my friends for the day, but I bailed last minute and decided to go to Six Flags,” senior Kelly Winkle said. “It was important to me to spend the day with the entire senior class. We can go to the lake whenever we want this summer.”
Fraternity day was the theme for Wednesday. The senior class arrived dressed in khaki shorts, Sperry shoes, over-sized Polo shirts, sunglasses, and Greek-life apparel.
“Frat day was the epitome of my senior year,” senior Julianne Hennessey said. “I’d frat it up every day if I could.”
Thursday was planned to be Luau/Beach theme day. The idea was created by swimmer Chris Bigelow who is University of Texas bound in the fall. Costumes for this day include swim trunks, luau skirts, floaties, and even swim goggles to those who felt like going all out.
Senior dress up week is concluded with College t-shirt day, where all seniors are to wear apparel representing which University they will be attending in the fall.
“It will be bittersweet,” Womack said. “It is the perfect ending to a perfect week and to a perfect year. I know people who are exempt from finals are still showing up to school just so they can be a part of this tradition and be in all the pictures.”
