The Coppell girls wrestling team is competing Saturday in the UIL State Wrestling Championships at the Berry Center in Houston.

Following the District 6-6A Championships, where the girls team placed first and the boys team placed fifth, the girls team placed second at the Class 6A Region II Championships at Allen High School on April 16.

Coppell senior Hannah Francis in the 215-pound weight class collected her third regional title in the category, while senior Ananya Sampathkumar in the 102-pound weight class and junior Maria Husain in the 95 pound weight class are regional runner-ups. Sophomore Scout Carrel in the 95-pound weight class placed third and senior Dorian Villalba in the 128 weight class placed sixth.

“We’re working on just being tough in a match,” Husain said. “I did much better than I did last regionals, but I still lost the match. We could have won, but we kind of held back because we were nervous.”

The wrestlers are focusing on refining technique and attitude to excel at state.

“Going into this next tournament, I’m hoping that I wrestle my hardest and I don’t leave anything behind,” Husain said. “Going the full time and not really holding yourself back [is important].”
