Krauss home run sets tone in victory over Farmers

Gripping the bat comfortably at the plate, Coppell senior pitcher Chayton Krauss watches the first fastball come across the plate.

Strike!

When the second pitch comes the exact same way, Krauss homers.

“I saw the first pitch fastball away and I was told they were going to keep pitching away,” Krauss said. “I saw the exact same pitch, put a good swing on it. Went with the pitch on the outside corner, hit it to right and got rewarded by the home run.”

The Cowboys, led by Krauss’s home run and four runs in the first inning, crushed Lewisville spirits and emerged victorious, 7-0, on Tuesday at the Coppell ISD Baseball/Softball Complex.  Krauss pitched six innings and senior pitcher Tim Malone closed out the seventh.

“Our bats have been struggling as of late and to get three runs on the board early in the game really helped free us up and play with confidence for the rest of the night,” Coppell coach Ryan Howard said. “We’re going into the last six ball games of the year; all of them are very important to us so it was good to get it started off with a win.”

Even with no errors from Coppell’s defense, Lewisville gave the Cowboys a scare in the fourth inning.

“They came out and we didn’t give them anything, they had three singles and three good at bats, but Chayton did a good job of bearing down and competing and limiting the damage to us,” Howard said. “Anytime you’re at this point in time in district and you control your own destiny, you’ve done enough to be in a good spot.”

As Lewisville’s pitchers pounded the outside corner and the wind aided their direction, hitting into the gaps was a struggle.

“For the most, we did a pretty good job hitting the ball the way we were supposed to and it was a great way to come out,” Coppell senior outfielder Ryan Walker said. “We have the same team Friday, so hopefully we can come out and get the same result. Right now, we’re in the driver’s seat of district play and as long as we keep doing what we’re doing right now, we can go out with a pretty high playoff spot.”
