After a relatively sluggish start to the game, the Coppell girls basketball team turned the tables on Marcus during the third quarter, and went on to a 51-40 victory on Friday night at the CHS arena.

“We got off to a slow start, but we picked it up around the second half and kind of put it away,” Coppell senior guard Emma Sherrer said. “We got a lot better ball movement this game; previously we’d been stagnant, we moved a lot better as a team. I’m proud of the way that we finished because sometimes games like that will get up and we let the team come back and we finished it, and ended up winning by [eleven] points.”

Coppell sophomore shooting guard Waverly Hassman ended the first quarter with 10 points scored and opened up the second quarter with a three-pointer. The Cowgirls came out on fire after halftime, putting Marcus on defense with their skilled ball movement. Coppell then dominated the fourth quarter, forcing Marcus into two quick turnovers to finish out the game. Hassman finished the game with 23 points, tying her career high.

“[Hassman] was really aggressive on her shot, making us a better team,” Coppell coach Ryan Murphy said. “[The players] just have to do things right on a regular basis and build up those habits of doing things right everyday and once we’re consistent that’s when winning comes into play.”

Even with its third district win, the Cowgirls think they need to work on their consistency with both their offensive and defensive plays.

“We’ll execute well on offense sometimes but not all the time, and sometimes we’ll play good defense and rotate like we need to and sometimes we don’t,” Sherrer said. “Since this is only our third district win it’s a pretty big deal for us. We came in knowing we need to win this game, and also since we beat Marcus [in] the first round of district we beat them twice to show them we’re actually the better team.”
