At most summer camps, the last year to attend camp for students is the summer before their senior year. However, this is not the case for a handful of seniors at CHS.
For seniors Kelly Winkle, Morgan Smith and Zane Feemster, camp will continue for many summers after their senior year. Each of these students have attended the same summer camp since they were in Elementary School and, starting this summer, will be counselors at these camps.
Senior Kelly Winkle has attended Camp Longhorn in Burnet, Texas since she was 8 years old.
“Going to Camp Longhorn for 10 years has really been so much fun,” Winkle said. “Since I have gone every single summer since first grade, I don’t think I could ever go a summer without being there, which is why I decided to become a counselor for three weeks there this summer. I did training for it last summer and had a blast.”
For Seniors Morgan Smith and Zane Feemster, Pine Cove Christian Camp has been their home away from home for several years now.
“Pine Cove is a really special place,” Smith said. “I absolutely love it there which is why I am training this summer to be able to become a counselor there in years to come.”
However, campers interested in becoming a camp counselor at Pine Cove have to go through a summer of training first. For boys, the program is called “Young Guns” and for girls it is referred to as “Baby Ruth’s”. The Young Guns and Baby Ruth’s train to become counselors by doing things such as working in the dining halls of different Pine Cove camps and helping out around the camps by doing busy work for five weeks.
“I’ve been going to Pine Cove since I was really little, so I’ve grown up loving it,” Feemster said. “I love the atmosphere it creates and how the camp allows you to grow spiritually on an incredibly deep level. As far as this summer goes, I’m totally pumped to grow in my walk with Christ as I am also able to help a camp that has given me so much over the years.”
All three of these seniors are planning on being counselors at these camps for many years to come.
“I plan on staying with Camp Longhorn for a really long time,” Winkle said. “I am going to The University of Texas next year and several of people that attend Camp Longhorn go there as well, so I have met many of my future classmates at this camp. It has a really special space in my heart.”
