KCBY, the Coppell High School’s student-run television station, has been steadily accumulating awards for the last year.  From local and regional contests to national conventions, KCBY has never failed to bring pride to CHS.

“It’s been a really good year for us, in terms of awards,” adviser Irma Kennedy said.

On Oct. 15, KCBY brought home its first Lone Star Emmy Award for Best High School Newscast.

Several 2016 CHS graduates who contributed to the award-winning 2015-16 Show 29 were recognized for their efforts including program directors Nick Wilson, Kiley Wecker, Marisa Thakady, Alana Rood and Matt Mudrick.

The Lone Star Emmy is a statewide award presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences that honors talented television journalists from the high school to professional levels.

During the ceremony, the Academy gave the title “Silver Circle” to famous journalists like KLTV’s Kenny Boles, KXAS’s John Jenkins, WFAA’s George Riba and KRGV’s Tim Smith.

“During the luncheon, the Silver Circles [media professionals] were sharing about their 25 years plus media experience and giving sort of their wisdom to the students,” Kennedy said. “I thought it was a perfect pairing and my students were definitely inspired.”

Wilson and Wecker produced the 2015-16 KCBY segment “Cole Bryant Named Student Coach” received another Lone Star Emmy Award.

“We were so excited,” Wecker said. “We make segments just for the love of sharing other people’s stories, but it is always the best feeling to be recognized for our work”

After winning the Best Light News and Best High School Newscast in Texas, the program was granted with two trophies and a name recognition.

“I would like to thank the previous PDs [Program Directors] that graduated last year because the award was really intended for them,” junior KCBY broadcast director Ashley Miznazi said. “They worked very hard and taught me what it takes to continue winning awards for KCBY.”
