Every February, millions celebrate Black History Month, a month dedicated to recognizing African-American cultures and achievements. Coppell High School junior Priscille Kompany, football coach Lonnie Teagle, student resource officer Reggie Walker and CHS sophomore Ikenna Okoli share the importance of the month, their personal connections and the ways they celebrate.
“[It is important] to remember all of the important stuff that it took for us to be where we are now, and to remember all the sacrifices people made so we can be free and counted as equals. History is important. You learn from history so you don’t have to repeat it again, and whenever you repeat history, bad things happen. And we don’t want slavery to happen again, do we?”...
“In my classes, we’ve talked about how it’s not just African-American history or black history, it’s American history. It is a huge part of our history and African Americans have contributed a lot to our country and it shouldn’t be separated. But because it has been neglected, we have to bring it to the forefront during Black History Month.”
"Honestly, for me, instead of Black History Month, I would love to see black history celebrated as American history. Not for the month of February, just whenever, as part of American history.
