Following Cedar Hill’s surge in the fourth inning, the Cowgirls proved resilient, bouncing back to slug their way to a victory. Wrapping up the Coppell & Marcus tournament, the Coppell softball team beat Cedar Hill, 7-5.

“After they got the lead, we were all ready to come back in and get some [runs],” Coppell junior catcher Dafne Mercado said. “We came out with a lot of intensity, and even though we weren’t expecting some of those errors, rundowns it’s good to learn.”

Coppell scored twice in the first inning and another run in the second to take a 3-0 lead. While Cedar Hill was batting in the fourth inning, Coppell struggled to rundown players.

“I liked how we were able to come out first and get three up, three down,” Mercado said. “But those rundowns were what killed us today.”

Cedar Hill made the game close but its comeback fell short, scoring five runs in the fourth inning.

“We started strong, good hitting, but we had one bad inning so that wasn’t enough,” Coppell junior pitcher Michaella Baker said. “But we came back strong and we didn’t let that bad inning affect us at the plate.”

On Friday night, Coppell lost to Aledo, 3-1. The Cowgirls loaded the bases but could only score one run.

“[Coppell sophomore pitcher Kat Miller] was pitching, and it was not where it needed to be and obviously,” Mercado said. “I liked how we kept 0-0 through multiple innings, now we know for next time, we just have to score before they do.”

Friday morning, the Cowgirls crushed Ennis, 13-5. With a struggling opponent, Coppell was able to capitalize on Ennis’ weaknesses.

“We were ready to just go in, play full speed and step on their throats,” Mercado said.

On Tuesday at 7 p.m., riding on the confidence of three wins of the Coppell & Marcus Tournament, the Cowgirls open District 6-6A play at Irving MacArthur.
