On Thursday at Buddy Echols Field, the Coppell soccer players will once again pull on their cleats to begin the 2019-20 season with a scrimmage against Frisco Wakeland at 7:30 p.m.

After last year’s 3-1 loss against Grand Prairie, the Cowboys’ season ended in elimination from Class 6A Region I area playoffs. The Cowboys emerge this season with renewed hopes of reaching the Class 6A State Championship.

“We are very excited to get our season started,” Coppell coach James Balcom said. “For this scrimmage, we want to make sure we get everyone playing time and see how they handle the varsity level. We are potentially starting two freshmen and two sophomores, so we are going to watch how they integrate into varsity.”

In previous years, Coppell’s starting lineup involved entirely upperclassmen, but this season the starting lineup includes two freshmen and two sophomores.

“We will be looking at how our players understand their roles and responsibilities on the field and look to see what adjustments we may have to make moving forward,” Balcom said.
