Despite a hard-fought battle in the first and second set against Flower Mound, Coppell lost to the Jaguars, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-10), in last night’s match at the CHS Arena.

The Cowgirls are now 6-4 in District 6-6A, and reigning state champions Jaguars are 10-0.

The first and second set were extremely similar with generally a two-point lead or tied score between Coppell and Flower Mound throughout the beginning half of the set. The second set was even closer than the first, with the Jaguars taking the win only in the last three points.

“Definitely a goal of ours is to finish those sets,” Coppell volleyball coach Julie Price said. “We were doing a really good job being competitive, getting into the 20-21, but we were just not finishing. We’ve got some rotations we’re struggling to score in, and that gives the other team runs.”

Despite having competitive games, the Cowgirls were unable to finish the sets with a victory.

“We need to focus on our offensive executions,” Coppell senior libero Maci Watrous said. “When it comes down to 20-20 in the score, we could really put the ball down and really push it instead of getting caught up in our mistakes at the end. We’re going to capitalize on finishing at the end.”

In contrast to the suspense of the first two sets, the third started with a lead by Flower Mound that only increased for the rest of the match.

“We had a lack in execution, if anything,” Watrous said. “We weren’t producing offensively and defensively as well as we should. That made a major contribution to the outcome, so we’re going to have to learn and grow from that so we finish next time.”

This match was also Teacher Appreciation Night for Coppell, allowing the Cowgirls to invite one teacher to honor in pre-match introductions.

Coppell plays Marcus on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Flower Mound.
