The good, the bad and the Ke$ha

The same artist that brought us the newest “it” song and told us to wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy released her first studio album only a few days into the new year. While some of her songs left me yearning for more, others had me immediately pushing skip.

Ke$ha’s Animal features many of the same upbeat sounds and clever rhymes as her first single, “Tik Tok”. The album provides not only an in-depth look at Ke$ha and her fiery personality, but also into what could potentially be the rest of her career.

The album has 14 tracks featuring a song with 3Oh!3 as well as an exclusive remixed version of “Tik Tok” that comes if you purchase that album on iTunes. Most high school girls will find her songs as easy to relate to as Taylor Swift’s, as many of them are about obsessions, stalking boys and unrequited love. You could actually say that it is an ideal album for the typical, emotional teenage girl.

When I first heard Ke$ha’s outrageous new songs, I was in love. The album is perfect for blaring in the car while dancing and singing with friends, which is exactly what I have done since the album was released.

My personal favorites are “Your Love Is My Drug” and “Party at a Rich Dude’s House”. Don’t let the names fool you; they are the best on the album. When you listen to the lyrics, they are quite entertaining and let you in on little bits of Ke$ha’s life, including a time when she got sick in a certain hotel heiress’ closet.

Four of her songs on the album, “Tik Tok”, “Your Love Is My Drug”, “Blah Blah Blah” and “Animal”, have made the top 10 on iTunes. Needless to say, the album has been a success.

But, after a week of hearing nothing-but-Ke$ha, I think it is time for me to put the album back in the case.

There is no depth of lyrical substance to hardly any of her songs, which makes them hard to continuously listen to. I’m actually convinced that a 5-year-old could have written some of them as the concepts and choruses are childish. Perhaps the worst songs on the album are “Dinosaur” and “Boots & Boys”. “Dinosaur” is about old men hitting on young girls and is more of a sing-a-long and spelling lesson than a number one hit, and “Boots & Boys” is…well, the title says it all.

I’m not saying each one of her songs needs to spur up the next mass musical movement, because I find that near impossible for a 22-year-old singer to accomplish. But a catchy beat and ignorant listeners can only get an album so far and, unfortunately for Ke$ha, that’s not far enough for a Grammy.

I truly liked the album and would recommend it to anyone who likes pop meets Lady GaGa meets Britney Spears. But, buyers beware: this album should not be listened to during intense study sessions, in libraries or quiet atmospheres for fear of elevated heart rate, feelings of rebellion that may or may not prohibit you from studying and the urges to dance and/or sing for the entirety of the album.
